1973-1976. Research assistant to Dr. Ellen Jarrett, Veterinary Parasitology Department, University of Glasgow. Awarded M.Sc. (1976).
1976-1979. Visiting Research Scientist, WHO/PAHO Immunology Research and Training Centre, Instituto Butantan, São Paulo, Brazil. Project: To set up a Parasitology laboratory and study immune mechanisms of parasite resistance in mice.

1979-1982. Postgraduate studentship. University of Glasgow. Awarded Ph.D. (1982).

1982-1985. Postdoctoral Research Fellow. University of Glasgow.

1985-1990. Senior Scientific Officer (Immunologist) at the Moredun Research Institute (MRI), Edinburgh.

1990-2002. Principal Scientific Officer, Head of Immunology, Moredun Research Institute.

2002-2007. Head, Division of Virology, Moredun Research Institute.

Host pathogen interactions in infectious disease of livestock. Pathogenesis and control of herpesvirus and poxvirus infections in livestock Innate immunity. Vaccine development. Livestock health solutions.
