Research Assistant (fixed term)

Applications are invited for this research position, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and Flu Lab, on a project aiming to develop a universal influenza vaccine that provides broad protection against a multitude of antigenically distinct influenza viruses.

The main focus of this position is to use and help develop next generation immunogenicity assays for the testing of vaccine candidates in pre-clinical models. This will primarily include the production and employment of lentiviral pseudotypes in neutralisation assays, but also cell based antigen-display assays using flow cytometry, both in 96 and 384 well formats. Further work will include the use of enzyme linked lectin and immunosorbent assays (ELLA & ELISA) and live influenza virus production and neutralisation assays. The position will involve general laboratory techniques (PCR based skills, plasmid purification, quality control) for which training will be given.

A secondary role for this position involves time spent in pre-clinical vaccine testing facilities as an Animal Technician. This role is fundamental to enable the cutting edge research work carried out by the group. You will work within a team of technicians and liaise with the researchers, ensuring the highest standard of day-to-day animal care. This will include acquiring blood samples from vaccinated animals and general animal husbandry. The Home Office license course will be provided (if not already held) as well as training in animal handling and associated procedures.
