Biography

Amos Lucky Mhone is currently a Graduate Fellow at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). He holds a BSc in Veterinary Medicine (DVM, Hons) from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), and Currently pursuing an MSc in Medical Microbiology at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). During his training and work experience, he gained extensive expertise in clinic and community animal diseases diagnostics and case management, veterinary medicines registration, inspection, and post-market surveillance, Farm-based biosafety, quality control and herd health of feedlot farming. Ticks and tick-borne disease control through the support of ITM vaccine production and quality control, and anti-tick vaccines. His current research interest is in solutions to Antimicrobial resistance of tropical neglected diseases, and he is currently undertaking research on Characterization of S. Enteritidis Bacteriophages and evaluation of phage delivery systems in chickens.

Biosecurity and quality control tests (feet and tire baths, TB tests, vaccinations), feedlot ration making and stall feeding, herding of sheep and cattle into pasture fields, post-mortem and meat inspection procedures.


June 2018: Volunteer Research Technician, Lilongwe Wildlife Trust, Kuti Wildlife Reserve, Salima, Malawi
Identifying and analysing tick colonies around warthog burrows with African Swine Fever (sylvatic cycle) Project, investigating velvet monkey population’s proximity to farming land and advising how to mitigate negative effects of monkeys.

August – October 2017: Intern, African Union Centre for Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases, Lilongwe, Malawi
Disease diagnostic procedures (PCR, ELISA, IFAT), assessing efficacy of East Coast Fever Vaccine using clinical trials, breeding ticks for vaccine production, parasite pick-up trial participation, tick pre-feeding and dissection to evaluate infection rate in salivary glands, vaccine quality control tests.
