I obtained a PhD at the University of Alberta, Canada and my studies focused on identifying the virulence mechanism of an anti-apoptotic protein of the myxoma poxvirus. I completed EMBO Postdoctoral fellowship studies at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, which involved dissecting apoptotic signaling and inflammation pathways, using viral proteins as research tools. I currently head the Mammalian Influenza Team at the Animal and Plant Health Agency.
Mammalian Influenza, Avian influenza
The Mammalian Influenza team are focused on mammalian, and particularly swine, influenza risks to veterinary and human health and to agriculture. The team is responsible for delivery of work under a Defra Influenza research program as well as work funded by RCUK, the EU an other collaborations. This work includes identifying new and emerging disease threats and assessing control measures to mitigate such threats. I am currently supporting efforts to develop informatics capability for analysis of whole genome sequencing ‘Big Data’ of both the host and pathogen, with particular emphasis on swine influenza virus.
