Biography

Jacqui Matthews is a graduate of Glasgow Veterinary School and obtained a PhD on parasite immunology at the same school. For the next 27 years, Jacqui's group focussed on veterinary helminthology at several of the UK's leading animal health organisations. Highlight outputs of her research include discovery of a sub-unit vaccine for control of teladorsagiosis in sheep and development of a diagnostic test for equine small redworm. The latter reached the commercial market in 2019. During this time, Jacqui won > £13 million in external funding culminating in being Coordinator of an EU-funded parasite vaccine programme, PARAGONE. She has published >140 peer-reviewed papers, reviews and book chapters and is editorial board member of several international journals. She currently sits on the BBSRC's Committee A and the UK Veterinary Products Committee. For many years, Jacqui was technical advisor to livestock industry group, COWS, providing evidence-based advice to farmers on parasite control. In 2017, she was granted Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and conferred Elsevier’s International Journal for Parasitology Award. She is a RCVS Specialist in Parasitology and Honorary Professor at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh. Since the early 2000's, in addition to teaching,  Jacqui dedicated much of her time to transferring knowledge on sustainable parasite control to stakeholders and became increasingly interested in translating basic science to impact. Aligned with this, she moved to Roslin Technologies as Chief Technology Officer in 2019 where she works on identifying, funding and managing exciting vet science and agritech projects helping them on their way to commercialisation. You can follow Jacqui on Twitter: @ProfJBMatthews.
