Sandy Sibusiso Ndlovu holds a master’s degree in Medical Virology from the University of Limpopo (MEDUNSA Campus), South Africa. He joined the Division of Medical Virology at UCT in 2014 for his PhD while he was based at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC-OVI), working on the African swine fever virus (ASFV). This virus can be spread by ticks and by contact with infected animals and causes significant disease including haemorrhagic fever in domestic and wild pigs. It has had serious economic impact around the world.
I have an interest in Vaccinology and Immunology.
I would like to further enhance my research in understanding the mechanisms by which interferons, cytokines, and other accessory molecules regulate T cell numbers and functions following acute and chronic virus infections. This experience will provide me with knowledge and strategies to improve vaccines against infectious diseases by manipulating these pathways.
My research focuses on the whole-genome sequencing and annotations of African swine fever virus isolates with the aim of identifying potential vaccine candidates.
