Biography

Iyiola Oladunjoye is a microbiologist, a one health advocate and a researcher with an interest in vaccine development and antimicrobial resistance. He aims to find sustainable solutions to the global threat of antimicrobial resistance by contributing vaccine solutions, most especially for bacterial pathogens. 

Iyiola was born on August 14, 1997 and had his primary education in Omolabake Nursery and Primary School, after which he completed his secondary education at Yaba College of Technology Secondary School. Iyiola graduated from the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Ilorin with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology as one of the best graduating students with First Class Honours.

Iyiola has since worked in academia, environmental management, food safety and public health sectors. Iyiola observed a mandatory national service at the Rivers State University as a Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant at the Department of Microbiology. Subsequently, he gained a position as an Environmental Microbiologist at EnvironQuest, a leading environmental consulting firm in Lagos, Nigeria. Afterwards, Iyiola worked as a Food Safety Coordinator at Rentokil Boecker, a multinational public health firm. Iyiola also gained a part-time role as One Health Research Coordinator at Rouleaux Foundation, a non-profit organisation aimed at promoting science for sustainable development in Africa by synergising the activities of the academia, government, industry, media and public.

As an emerging One Health researcher that has published over 25 journals in many reputable high-impact international journals, and scientist in multiple One Health-related sectors, Iyiola has recognised the need to address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. This led to his strong resolve in proffering vaccine solutions to this growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. Subsequently, he was awarded 5 fully-funded scholarships including 3 PhD offers in the United States and Erasmus Mundus Master Scholarships for 2 programmes including Infectious Diseases and One Health and Leading International Vaccinology Education.

Iyiola is currently an Erasmus Master of the Leading International Vaccinology Education programme, a two-year programme for talented and motivated students interested in multidisciplinary studies in Vaccinology.  It is a joint project between five European universities including Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universitat de Barcelona, Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne and Universiteit Antwerpen. Iyiola also co-founded the Youths Against HIV Discrimination in 2022, a youth-led organisation aimed at advocating for the increase by 55% investment in HIV prevention programmes directed towards adolescent girls in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Iyiola has also won many other numerous awards and fellowships. He was selected as one of the 13 young professionals for the One Health Advocacy and Mentorship programme, organised by the One Health and Development Initiative. In 2020, Iyiola was appointed an honorary role as the Young Ambassador of Science to Nigeria by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), a position that has been renewed for 3 tenures based on his numerous impacts and projects in advancing microbial sciences. In 2022, Iyiola was selected as a Future Leaders Against AMR, an international programme for students and early career professionals, designed to support their development as future leaders in the work against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), funded by The Foundation to Prevent Antibiotic Resistance (PAR Foundation). Iyiola was also selected as fellow of the ASM Future Leaders Mentoring Fellowship programme, and a 2022 West Africa Rhodes Scholarship Finalist. Iyiola has also won grants to attend and present at numerous conferences including the World Microbe Forum, ASM Microbe 2022, inVivo Planetary Health conference and Planetary Health Annual Meeting.

Iyiola is committed to tackling issues in One Health and infectious diseases including zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance using vaccine-based solutions, and he's committed to building capacity for African Vaccine Manufacturing.
