I was born in Gusau town, Zamfara State, Northwestern Nigeria. My early interest in Biology was sparked by observing birds, insects, and milking lactating cows on my grandfather's farm. I obtained a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUSokoto) in 2004 and worked as a veterinary officer on a farm with over 30,000 poultry, 20 exotic dairy cows, and other livestock.
After working for another year under the Nigerian Ministry of Animal Health and Livestock Development, I later joined the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at UDUSokoto as a lecturer, dedicating 40% of my time to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, 30% to research, and 20% to volunteer work. I received a Postgraduate Certificate in International Animal Health (PgCert-IAH) from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
I was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship to study for a Master of Science in Control of Infectious Diseases in Animals (MSc-CIDA) jointly offered by the Royal Veterinary College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, England. My MSc-CIDA project looked at “Factors associated with bovine tuberculosis confirmation rates in suspect lesions found in cattle at routine slaughter in Great Britain, 2003-2008”, which was supervised by Professor Dirk U. Pfeiffer and Dr. Sarah Downs, who emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. My research in quantitative epidemiology, public health, and farm animal health was published in peer-reviewed journals.
My recent interest focuses on udder health in ruminants and the epidemiology of mastitis in lactating cows in Northwestern Nigeria. In addition to Biology, I believe that addressing complex public health challenges requires collaboration with experts in other fields, including Physics, Climatology, Mathematics, Statistics, and the Social Sciences.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, visiting history and culture museums, and watching movies of various genres. I also have a passion for philanthropy, social media platforms and discussion groups, medical journalism, and science communications.
In summary, I have a diverse range of experiences and accomplishments in the fields of veterinary medicine, public health, and epidemiology. My work highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex public health challenges, and my personal interests reflect my curiosity and dedication to learning and making a positive impact in the world.
