View profileBiography
Vishwanatha Reddy (VR) obtained a Bachelor’s in Veterinary Medicine in 2007, and a Master of Veterinary Science in Biochemistry in 2010 from India. Subsequently, VR obtained a PhD in Veterinary Virology at Ghent University, Belgium, focused on the pathogenesis of infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), and this confirmed his particular interest in poultry viruses. In 2016, he joined the Pirbright Institute as a Postdoctoral Scientist to further his research on the vaccinology and immunopathogenesis of avian viruses. He initially focused on herpes virus of turkeys (HVT), Marek’s disease virus (MDV), and ILTV under the mentorship of Prof. Venugopal Nair and Dr. Yongxiu Yao, and then worked on infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) under Dr. Andrew Broadbent, and MDV under Prof. Shahriar Behboudi. In September 2023, he was awarded a Pirbright Strategic Career Development Award (PSCDA) to work on his own IBDV research project at Pirbright. In April 2024, he was appointed to a Lectureship (independent Principal Investigator position) in the School of Life Sciences at Keele University.
Research interests
At Keele, Vishwanatha Reddy leads research on understanding infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) pathogenesis, including the mechanism by which the virus causes cell death in the Bursa of Fabricius, and unravelling how this results in IBDV-mediated immunosuppression that exacerbates the pathogenesis of secondary infections of zoonotic importance such as avian influenza virus (IAV).
