Biography

I worked as a certifying veterinarian at an export abattoir for eight years. We did basic food safety monitoring. This is where my interest in bacteriology started.

In 2003 I moved to a government run laboratory where I had the opportunity to develop more specialised knowledge in the field of food safety bacteriology by managing the food safety laboratory. In addition I managed the clinical microbiology laboratory which gave me the opportunity to develop in that direction. In 2010 I completed an MSc during which I worked on antimicrobial resistance in thermophilic Campylobacter.

At the end of 2015, I accepted a position at the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria. I enrolled for a PHD on the bacterial and fungal causes of ruminant abortion. In addition I am subject specialist to the clinical bacteriology laboratory and I lecture to second and third year veterinary students as well as nursing students on microbiology and bacterial diseases. My ultimate goal is to qualify for board certification as specialist bacteriologist.
