Ahmed
Dr. Basem Ahmed graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Cairo University in 2007. He earned his master's degree in 2012 and his PhD in 2016, both in virology, focusing on influenza virus vaccines. In 2019, he trained in Varicellovirus equidalpha1 genome manipulation at the Institute of Virology, Free University of Berlin, Germany. Following his PhD, Dr. Ahmed led research in the virology graduate lab, participated in five research grants (two as principal investigator), mentored numerous master's and PhD students, and published over 30 peer-reviewed articles on various virology topics. He has advised two local vaccine manufacturers and contributed to the development of several poultry vaccines currently available in the Egyptian market. Currently, Dr. Ahmed is the chairman of the Department of Virology at Cairo University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, a board member of the Egyptian Society of Virology, and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Virological Sciences. His primary research interests include tracking and understanding the evolution of animal viruses, improving diagnostics and vaccines for animal viruses, and promoting One Health initiatives.
