After being retired from Mahidol University, where I worked as a lecturer at the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University in Bangkok from 1976 to 2016, teaching neurosciences and gross anatomy to medical and graduate students, I have become a commercial shrimp grower. My last position in the university was the director of the Center of Excellence for Shrimp Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (Centex Shrimp), and my research has been concentrated on shrimp diseases and culture technology, with publications on peer-review process >150 articles. The purpose of setting up my own shrimp farm, which is currently cultivating the Pacific whiteleg shrimp Litopeneus vannamei, is to have a small income while continuing to promote research activities. The farm, AquaAcademy, as I prefer to call, is located in Tha Chana, a small district in Surat Thani Province, 600km south of Bangkok, on a small land area (3 hectare) closed to the gulf of Thailand. Shrimp culture technology, including three reservoir ponds (0.5 hectare each) and one shrimp rearing pond (0.6 hectare); 80% re-circulation; disease prevention measures; minimal uses of chemicals (limes, etc.); and being environmentally friendly conditions, have been installed. The culture performance has been successful so far, with a production of 9-10 tons/3 mo (crop) with the 30-40g/kg sized shrimp.
