Biography

Mr. Jean Paul Habimana is a veterinary doctor and has a master's in tropical animal health from ITM, Antwerp, Belgium. His research interests are in bacterial diseases, the microbiological quality of products of animal origin, zoonotic diseases, and ticks and tick-borne diseases.

He joined the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) of the UR-CAVM as an assistant lecturer and laboratory manager, where he oversees the parasitology and microbiology laboratories at the UR-Nyagatare campus. His position is regarded as strategic by the SVM, where he is involved in teaching, research, and community outreach activities. He provides technical support and guides the students, the lecturers, and other researchers from outside our school to conduct their research in the laboratory of microbiology and parasitology. He also mentors students during laboratory internships. Furthermore, he analyzes clinical samples from different farms in the eastern province of Rwanda as part of the community outreach activities of his school. He is  one of the faculty mentors for the Rwanda Health Innovation Club (SOHIC).

Mr. Habimana worked with different organizations in the domain of animal production and veterinary service delivery as a part-time job, a volunteer, or as an entrepreneur. He is passionate about working with smallholder farmers,  he has been able to win four small grants with the objectives of building the capacity of smallholder farmers in animal disease prevention and control, zoonotic disease control, milk quality, tick-borne disease control, and feed production and storage. He is also passionate about doing research, either personally or as a team member, and so far he has been involved in different research projects on brucellosis, aflatoxin, mastitis, and FMD.

He has technical expertise in developing extension programs for smallholder farmers, laboratory design and management, project management and evaluation, mentorship skills, and laboratory biosafety and biorisk management. He attended the 2nd International Health Conference in Kampala, Uganda, and presented a poster at the University of Rwanda International Scientific Conference.
