FUNDING: Developing innovative veterinary solutions for the fight against antimicrobial resistance

The Canadian government's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK’s Global AMR Innovation Fund (GAMRIF), part of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), are pleased to announce the launch of a funding call for research proposals to reduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in poultry, swine, and aquaculture animals.

AMR continues to be a threat to global human and veterinary health. In a recent meeting at Wilton Park, the DHSC and the IDRC announced the launch of InnoVet-AMR – a CA$27.9 million partnership that will fund new research to generate Innovative Veterinary Solutions for Anti-Microbial Resistance. 

Through InnoVet-AMR, IDRC and DHSC seek to:

  • support research that will identify innovative veterinary solutions, including vaccines, to reduce the inappropriate use of antibiotics in livestock and aquaculture operations in low and middle-income countries (LMICs); and
  • build effective partnerships to improve the coordination, discovery, development, and sustainable delivery of innovative veterinary solutions to reduce the use of antimicrobials in livestock and aquaculture operations in LMICs.

This unique funding opportunity will support research on innovative veterinary solutions to reduce therapeutic and prevent non-therapeutic antimicrobial use by farmers in developing countries, with successful projects receiving up to CA$3 million for no more than 33 months.
