The Roslin Institute is seeking to recruit a senior research assistant to join the group of Dr Timothy Connelley. The group has a number of projects looking at immunological responses and vaccine development in livestock species.

The position requires someone with experience in both cellular and molecular biology techniques who has the ability and willingness to independently conduct their own areas of laboratory work as well as support other members of the group.

The post-holder will also be expected to play a major role in laboratory management.

Job Purpose

To be a member of a research team working in the broad area of Infection and Immunity at the Roslin Institute. This will entail leading, designing and carrying out laboratory-based experiments in the Connelley group and contributing to the day-to day functioning of the laboratory; experiments may include in vivo work in cattle. The role will also entail responsibility for laboratory management duties in the Connelley group.

Main Responsibilities

  • Gather research data and conduct experiments under supervision as part of a team addressing specific research projects in the Connelley group. The post-holder will be required to design experiments, perform tissue/cell culture and in vivo experiments, and analyse tissues/cells using molecular biology techniques, supporting projects being led by other members of the group but also leading own projects. Protocols will be clearly defined research methods, although some aspects of methodologies may require to be adapted to the particular project in hand. Expertise in in vivo, in vitro tissue culture and molecular techniques mentioned above will be of benefit. 70%
  • Manage lab resources for the Connelley group, organise ordering for the group, co-ordinate sample collection from experimental animals, prepare ‘in-house’ reagents (e.g. antibodies). Assist in management of the tick colony. 15%
  • Maintain accurate record keeping related to all data gathered in the context of the experimental work, including maintenance of sample and cryostabilate banks and databases. Appropriately manage own time to meet established project deadlines. 10%
  • Training of visitors, new students and members of the group in established technologies. 5%

Salary

This is a full time position, 35 hours per week, fixed term to 31 December 2021, and attracts a salary of £33,797-£40,322 (grade UE07).
